Case1 When you eat at restaurants

When you enter a restaurant

  • いらっしゃいませ。何名様ですか?(Irasshaimase. Nanmeisama desuka?) Welcome. How many people are you?
    →「いらっしゃいませ」(Irasshaimase) is a greeting.
    「何名様ですか?」(Nanmeisama desuka?) is a question to ask you how many people you are.
    You can answer like this: 「二人です。」(Futari desu.) Table for two, please.「三人です。」(Sannin desu.) Table for three, please.
  • お席までご案内いたします(Osekimade goannai itashimasu.) I will show you to a table. /お好きな席にお座りください (Osukina sekini osuwarikudasai.) Please have a seat whenever you want.
    →When you are told that 「お席までご案内いたします。」(Osekimade goannai itashimasu.), please follow the staff. When you are told that 「お好きな席にお座りください」(Osukinasekini osuwarikudasai.), you can seat whatever you want if the seats are available.

When you want to order

  • すみません(Sumimasen) Excuse me.
    →After you decide what you eat, you say this word with raising your hand to call a staff.
  • ご注文をお伺いします(Gochumon wo oukagaishimasu.) /ご注文はお決まりですか? (Gochumon wa okimaridesuka?) Are you ready to order?
    →Both questions are the same meaning. You will order like this:「○○をお願いします。」(○○ wo onegashimasu.) I’ll have a ○○, please. When you order the same menu more than one, you will say 「○○を△つお願いします。」(○○ wo △ onegaishimasu.) I’ll have △ ○○, please.). ○○ is replaced by the name of the dishes. △ is replaced by a number.
  • 他にご注文はございますか?(Hokani gochumonnwa gozaimasuka?) Anything else?
    →If you finish ordering, you say「いいえ、大丈夫です。」(Iie daijobudesu.) That’s all.
  • ご確認させていただきます。○○が二点、○○が一点… 以上でよろしいでしょうか。(Gokakunin saseteitadakimasu. ○○ ga niten, ○○ ga itten … ijode yorosiideshoka.)Please let me confirm your order. It’s 2 ○○, … and 1 ○○. Is this alright with you?
    →When it is correct, you say 「はい、大丈夫です。」(Hai daijobudesu.) That’s right.

When a staff brings your dish

  • お待たせいたしました。○○でございます。(Omataseitashimashita. ○○ de gozaimasu.)Thank you for waiting. Here is ○○.
  • ご注文は以上でお揃いでしょうか。(Gochumon wa ijode osoroideshoka.) Do you have everything you ordered?
    →Staffs will ask this question to confirm that they have served all of your order. When every dish you ordered is served, you say 「はい、大丈夫です。」(Hai, Daijobudesu.) Yes, That’s all.

When you pay

  • レシートはよろしいですか?(Reshito wa yoroshidesuka?) Do you need a receipt?
    →When you need a receipt, you can say「お願いします」(Onegaishimasu.) Yes, please. When you do not need it, you can say「大丈夫です」(Daijobudesu.) No, thank you.

Case 2 At the restaurant (to go)

  • いらっしゃいませ。ご注文をお伺いします。(Irasshaimase. Gochumon wo oukagaisimasu.) Welcome. Are you ready to order?
    → When you order your dish, you say 「○○をお願いします」(○○ wo onegaishimasu.) I’ll take ○○.

Case 3 At a restaurant

  • 店内でお召し上がりでしょうか?(Tennai de omesiagarideshoka?) お持ち帰りでしょうか?(Omochikaeri deshoka?) For here or to go?
    →If you eat at the restaurant, you can say「店内で食べます」(tennai de tabemasu.) For here, please. When you bring it out you can say 「持って帰ります」(Motte kaerimasu.) To go please.
