How to buy and use ICOCA

ICOCA is an IC card which you can use to pay fare when you take a train or bus. You can also use it as a commutation pass.
Where to buy
You can buy ICOCA at ticket vending machines or ticket counters. You can find them at every station of West Japan Railway Company (JR West). Vending machines are called 「みどりの券売機(みどりのけんばいき)“Midorino Kenbaiki”, 「ピンク色の自動券売機」(ぴんくいろのじどうけんばいき)”Pinkuirono Zidoukenbaiki”. The ticket counter is called「みどりの窓口」(みどりのまどぐち)”Midorino Madoguchi”. You can also buy ICOCA at subway stations and other stations operated by other railway companies such as Sanyo, Hankyu and Hanshin. You can even buy it at the counter of bus company such as Sanyo.
How to buy
- Go to a ticket vending machine
- Press the button 「ICOCAを買う」(いこかをかう) “ICOCA wo kau”
- Select the amount of charge and press the button. Usually, there is only “2,000yen” button.
- Make a payment(You have to pay deposit which costs 500 yen.)
(4. Select “Need receipt” 「領収書あり」(りょうしゅうしょあり) or “Not need receipt” 「領収書なし」(りょうしゅうしょなし)and push the button)
*Ryoshusho means receipt. - Take ICOCA out from the ticket vending machine.
How to use
Please touch the ticket gate with your ICOCA when you enter and get out from the station. Please be careful not to put your ICOCA into the ticket gate just like tickets. Transportation fee is automatically calculated and the amount will be deducted from your charged amount.
How to charge
You have to charge ICOCA when the balance becomes small. You can charge it at ticket vending machines or fare-adjustment machines.
How to charge ICOCA is as below;
- Insert ICOCA into a ticket vending machine(or other related machines).
The place to insert ICOCA depends on machines. You may insert ICOCA horizontally, vertically or just put it to the designated place.
- Choose the price you want to charge
- Make a payment
- If you need a receipt, press the receipt button.
- Take your ICOCA from the machine
ICOCA is very useful because you can easily get it at ticket machines, and you can easily use it. Once you have ICOCA, you do not have to buy a ticket every time. Please just be careful of the balance. If the balance is not enough, you cannot get out from the station.
