Heatstroke

You may get heatstroke when you are in a place where its temperature or humidity is high, the wind is weak, or the sunlight is strong. Heatstroke occurs not only outside but also inside the building. Today, let’s learn what heatstroke is, how to deal with it, and how to prevent it.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke is caused because you sweat a lot, your body temperature increases, the function of brain are weakened, and you cannot adjust your body temperature. When you get heatstroke, you do not sweat properly and the surface of your body becomes dry. Heatstroke causes symptoms such as disturbance of consciousness, abnormal behavior, hyperpnea, generalized convulsion. Heatstroke damage organs throughout the body and lack of prompt treatment leave you with brain damage. Worst case scenario, you will die.

How to deal with heatstroke

When you get heatstroke, what you do first is cooling your body.Put ice into plastic bags, ice pack and cool your neck, underarms or groin.

Also, you must drink water including salt or a hydration drink.

Prevention of heatstroke

Room inside

  • Adjust temperature by using fan or air conditioner
  • Use a blackout curtain, water sprinkling, bamboo blinds
  • Check room temperature frequently

Room outside

  • Use an umbrella to protect you from sunlight and wear a cap.
  • Use sunshade and take a rest frequently
  • Refrain from going out during the daytime when it is too hot outside

  • Wear breathable, hygroscopic and quick dry clothing
  • Cool your body by using ice pack, ice, or cool towel

 

To prevent suffering from heatstroak, please drink water and intake salt frequently when you are not only outside but also inside room.

Heatstroke has other symptoms; heat cramps, thermal fatigue, and heat syncope.

Heat syncope

People do not have a fever by heat syncope. Heat syncope occurs because blood vessels expand to lower the body temperature, blood temperature decreases, and blood flow to the brain decreases. Symptoms are dizziness, lightheadedness, tachycardia, increase in respiration rate faintness. Although the surface of body is hot, the body temperature of inside does not increase.

Heat cramps

You get heat cramps when you sweat a lot and drink only beverages which does not contain salt. When you sweat, you lose not only water but also salinity. If you drink only beverages which does not contain salt, saline concentration of your body becomes diluted. This causes muscle pain, or cramp in your arm or leg.

Thermal fatigue

 

Thermal fatigue occurs when you sweat a lot and become dehydrated. When you become dehydrated, you gradually become not sweat properly, and your body temperature increases because heat is accumulated inside your body. Also, the amount of moisture in your body decreases because of dehydration and the amount of blood which circulates in your body decreases. This deteriorate the organ function and causes many kinds of symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, and headache.
