“Warnings” and “Advisories”

When a big typhoon or heavy rain is coming, “Warnings” or “Advisories” will be issued by Japan Meteorological Agency. When warnings are issued, there might be no class at school and events might be cancelled. Then, do you know what kind of warnings and advisories there are? Do you know how to know whether any warnings or advisories are issued at a certain timing? Today we will talk about warnings and advisories.

Types

  • Advisories
    1. Advisories are issued when there is a risk of disaster. For example, there are following advisories;

Heavy rain

Flood

Heavy snow

Strong wind

Wave, High tide

Thunder

Fog

Dryness

  • Warnings

Warnings are issued when there is a risk of serious disaster. There are following warnings;

Heavy rain, Flood, Heavy snow, Storm, Snowstorm, Wave, High tide

  • Emergency Warnings

In 2013, Emergency Warnings are newly established to call people’s attention to prepare for disasters which are more serious than Warnings. It is issued to call people’s attention when there is a risk of disasters such as a heavy rain which are expected to be far more serious than conventional Warnings. Emergency Warnings have following types;

Heavy rain, Heavy snow, Storm, Snowstorm, Wave, High tide

What happens when warnings are issued

  • When warnings are issued, the schedule of your (or your children’s) schools and working places might be changed.

Example)The rule of elementary schools in Kobe city

Elementary school changes its schedule or even might close itself when warnings of heavy rain, flood, storm, heavy snow or snowstorm are issued. The decisions are made at the following three timing.

      1.  7 a.m.

When warnings are issued, children must stay home and wait for update.
When warnings are not issued, there will be classes as usual.

2. 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

If warnings become off during the time, classes will begin from the 3rd hour. (The detail time might differ depending schools.)
If warnings are still on, children must continue to stay home and wait for update.

3. 10 a.m.

If warnings are still on at 10 a.m., there will be no class for all the day.

How to check whether warnings and advisories are issued

Then how can we know whether warnings and advisories are issued at a certain timing? Here we introduce some methods. You can choose any of them which is convenient to you.

  • Check on TV (data information)

Push “Data Button” (D button) and select “Weather Information”, then you will be able to know whether any warnings or advisories are issued at the place you live.

  • Check on Web pages

You can know whether any warnings or advisories are issued at some Web pages. There are following examples;

  • Check a notice from school

If you have children, you can check a notice from school via E-mail, application or Web page of the school)

There are many disasters such as typhoon or heavy rain in Japan. Warnings and advisories are issued frequently. What to do when warnings are issued is especially important. Let’s remember it before disasters come.
